Jay Rock: ‘Just Like Me’ Music Video

Jul 6 2011

Jay Rock and Top Dawg Entertainment released the music video for “Just Like Me”, another track off of Jay Rock’s debut album Follow Me Home.

This stark and minimalistic music video is another brilliant addition to Jay Rock’s arsenal of moving street life depictions. With unmistakable authenticity, Jay Rock portrays familiar characters in the hood: the gangbanger and the drug dealer.

Each verse begins with first-person empathy: Jay Rock knows where these characters are coming from. However, when his flow gets faster we hear the other side of the story: sure the drug dealer is making money but he’s also putting himself at large risk of arrest all while causing another death by overdose.

Jay Rock ends these portrayals with the line: “It’s a sickness when you kill your own kind.”

Jay Rock is taking street rap to the next level and transcending the genre through his simultaneous role as observer and participant. If this song is any indication of the rest of the album, Follow Me Home is bound to be an instant classic of West Coast hip hop.
