The Pledge: A Line In The Sand [Editorial]

May 30 2011

Technician I am wholeheartedly in life and in death!” These are the words that have united an underground nation, and have drawn a clear line in the sand. The Pledge came about after Tech shared a photo of it over Twitter. The wrinkled sheet of paper with an almost illegible scrawl on it left fans confused and full of questions. However, once Tech posted a video of himself saying these now infamous words, we started to take it more seriously. Now every day, most times twice, we see Tech post something via his Facebook. People call into the SM Live to take this pledge, and if anyone notices right after the post are these words: “I’m going to have our pledge and we’re going to put the pledge on them. If they want to be a part of us, they gotta know the pledge. When I say “one, two, three spit it” they’re supposed to be able to say it to me. – Tech N9ne.” Why is Tech doing this? The answer is simple, to make a clear line between “old” and “new” fans.

This isn’t a bad thing. It’s not a discrimination of any kind. This is to give his older fans base that underground feel, as Tech hits mainstream with All 6’s and 7’s. We all know Tech is having numerous high profile mainstream artists on the upcoming album, such as Lil Wayne, Yelawolf, Cee Lo Green and many more. With these “new fans” joining the “older fan” base we are left to wonder; will we be forgotten? Not with the Pledge, that gives us something to rally around.

Imagine you’re at the Tech show and you see everyone reppin their strange gear, people yelling “Strange!”, off to the side people scream back “Music.” The show starts, the lights fall. Tech enters; the crowd erupts. Everyone is happy, feeling the love that only a Tech show can give. Half way through the show, Tech goes acapella testing his real fans. He screams “One! Two! Three! Spit it!”. The walls shake the roof. We are all screaming the Pledge. You look about and see confused “new” faces. You smile knowing we are the real Tech fans! That is something that no measure of mainstream success will ever take away.
