Tale Of The Tape: ¡MAYDAY! – Lords Of The Fly

¡Mayday! - Lords Of The Fly MixtapeBefore finding themselves Stuck On An Island, Miami’s own ¡MAYDAY! was bracing for impact on 2010’s Lords Of The Fly mixtape. Built as a prelude to the group’s full length LP, the mixtape offered fans brand new remixes, freestyles, and a few surprise guest appearances that lend the mixtape some heavyweight star power.

Taking full advantage of their comedic and charismatic personalities, the members of ¡MAYDAY! play out the mixtape as a series of press conferences addressing the disappearance of the band. Scattered throughout the mixtape, the skits are a perfect example of how to add a bit of a story to a release without oversaturating it with mindless filler. Highlighting nearly everything the band had accomplished on the road to Stuck On An Island, Lords Of The Fly packs a whopping 26 tracks, including some of ¡MAYDAY!’s biggest hits.

Lil Wayne marks the biggest guest spot with three exclusive ¡MAYDAY! remixes that include “Get A Life”, “Da Da Da”, and “On Fire”. With brand new production provided by Plex Luthor and new verses from Wrekonize and Bernz, the Weezy remixes get a real mixtape facelift. Taking the title for most explosive smash single on the mixtape is “Groundhog Day (Movers N’ Shakers Remix)” featuring Cee-Lo Green, Mack Maine, and Ghostwridah. The catchy and fast paced hit is no doubt a favorite on the dancefloor. Other guest appearances include NORE, David Banner, and Devin The Dude.

¡MAYDAY! even puts a stamp on their Strange Music signing with a crushing remix of a Tech N9ne classic. “Big Bad Wolf (Red Moon Remix)” updates the Tech track with eerie and stylistic production once again provided by Plex Luthor. Keeping the original Tech vocals in place, Wrek hits the remix with his own verse and a brand new hook. The new take on this horror influenced track practically makes the original a distant memory.

Putting their own spin on a hip hop mixtape, ¡MAYDAY! lands a home run with Lords Of The Fly. Mixing just enough classic hip hop production with their own alternative taste, the band delivers a solid tape that hip hop heads can appreciate and metal heads can jam out to. The perfect companion to Stuck On An Island, this mixtape is sure to be booming out of sound systems this summer.
