Even though Follow Me Home has finally seen its release, Jay Rock has not let up one bit in his grind. The Watts MC is still hitting the media hard and promoting his first full length. With huge hits like “Hood Gone Love It” and “Finest Hour” fueling the album’s success, Jay Rock is riding high on a wave of buzz from the hip hop community. Speaking to Vibe.com, Jay Rock discussed his relationship with Strange Music and TDE, the process behind Follow Me Home, and his feelings on watching Kendrick Lamar grow as an artist. On writing “Finest Hour”, Jay Rock shared his thought process behind the Rick Ross collaboration:
“When I wrote [‘Finest Hour’] I was thinking about all of the successful people I seen growing up. People I seen in my neighborhood, on TV and in movies—people that were just on a higher scale. At any given time you can lose it try not to worry about that. Just live for the moment instead of stressing. Keep a good spirit but if the worst happens, you lived it out in your finest hour.”
Follow Me Home gave listeners everywhere a taste of what Top Dawg Entertainment is capable of. With Kendrick Lamar next up to bat, Jay Rock’s Black Hippy collective is reaching the top of the West Coast rap game.
