Referred to as the “ugly duckling” of the album, “Was” stands alone in its own right within the Mystic lineup, as the track details Mackenzie recognizing her rock bottom and being motivated to be better than she ever “Was”, a crucial step in her recovery. Mackenzie recorded the song again and again and again pursuing a final form that satisfied her. And, while it never got to a place where she truly loved it, she knew she must have written the song for a reason and that its content was vital to the story of the album. Her the song are still very much developing a relationship. It’s a work in progress.
