Happy Mother’s Day From Strange Music

May 8 2011

For this special day to celebrate those special women that brought us into the world, we asked the artists to tell us what their mother meant to them. Here’s what Kutt Calhoun, Krizz Kaliko, Tech N9ne, Big Scoob, and Stevie Stone had to say:

What does your mom mean to you?

Big Scoob

She raised the family! My father died on my fifth birthday so I didn’t have a father, you know what I mean? So I didn’t have a father. I grew up with just my moms, but it there was a whole family structure: my grandma, my great great auntie, and my great great uncle, but really, it was on my moms back to raise us. She did her best. I got an older brother and an older sister. A woman don’t know how to raise a man but she did her best raising us. The streets raised us a little bit more in raising us but she did her best, so I love her to death.

Krizz Kaliko

Everything. She’s the reason that I am Krizz Kaliko. She’s the reason I do music. She taught me what music was and kind of forced me into it and is why I am who I am today.

Stevie Stone

Everything! Without her there’s no me. She inspired in me her principles My mama is still here with me so luckily I’m still able to show her my appreciation.

Tech N9ne

My mom means the world to me man. She’s been tormented all her life. She’s the reason why I love, she’s the reason why I respect. She’s everything. I wish I saw her more than I do. Without my mama–of course it’s self-explanatory–I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be the wonderful dude I am–I think I’m a wonderful dude, I got motherfuckers that’ll agree with me, I just aint on my own dick. My mom made me the pleasant dude I am.

What would you tell people out there who are wondering what they should do for their mom on Mother’s Day?

Kutt

I tell you what, if it’s something simple like just a call, you should do it. Call your mother on Mother’s Day, tell her Happy Mother’s Day. Maybe have a quick conversation about what she’s done or just tell her thank you! If she goes “Thank you for what?” Just say “Thanks for everything that you’ve done for me” or whatever she’s done for you over the years–for your whole life or even just for having you because one day you could look up and your mom isn’t here. If anything, if you don’t say too much at least tell her that you love her.

Big Scoob

I mean if you’re wondering what you should do for your mother on one day of the year you already fucked up. You should already be doing everything your mother needs you to do, you know what I mean? Every day of the year.

Krizz Kaliko

You wouldn’t even be here if it wasn’t for your mother. Honor your mother as provided you have a cool relationship. It’s your mom, if you don’t, do what you do, but I think it’s super important. For my mom I always get her a nice little simple gift if I can. This year I bought her a really good ballpoint pen, like a hundred-dollar ballpoint pen, because I know she likes pens that write good because she’s used them for so many years.

Stevie Stone

If you have the chance definitely go be with her. If you have the same beliefs on what that day represents for them then celebrate that and whatever that entails. If I was with my mom we’d definitely be getting up bright-and-early having breakfast and going to church. We’d have a bunch of relatives come over and have fellowship with each other.

Tech N9ne

Just call her and say you love her, even if you’re not near her. Call her and talk to her. Last time I saw my mom she couldn’t even talk–she was in the hospital and she was mumbling. She said “I wish I had a soda…” I’m like “No, mama you don’t need no soda, that’s why you sick!” They said she had diabetes, you know what I’m sizzling? She couldn’t really talk. I tell my people: talk to your mama, if you can.
