“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
The soul-stirring “M.O.N.E.Y.” serves as a lyrical and thematic highlight for Jay Rock’s debut album Follow Me Home. Another track produced with the signature menacing piano notes of Terrace Martin (“Just Like Me”), Jay Rock breaks down the ways that the lust for currency creates malaise in our hearts and in our society.
For his verses, Jay Rock uses the poetic technique of alliteration to remarkable effect, in which he groups words together that start with the same letter, going through the letters in the word “money” from beginning to end:
“Motivated by money
Money is mesmerizing
Many are murdered for it
While mayhem is exercising
Mighty as Morpheus
And it might pay your mortgages
Plus the morgue got some more of it
That embalming fluid merges through your muscles
Immortalist philosophy rules…”
J. Black provides a palpable desperation on the hook, crooning what people will do for currency’s sake. In these tough times, “M.O.N.E.Y.” resonates with us all.
