President Of Top Dawg Ent. Says They Took Lessons From The Business Model Of Strange Music

Oct 3 2013

In the world of independent music, real recognizes real.

Top Dawg Entertainment President Punch recently said in an interview with HipHopDX to have taken after the examples of Strange Music on how to build a brand independently. Of course you’re probably aware that TDE artist Jay Rock released his debut album Follow Me Home in a joint partnership between Strange Music and TDE. With all the time spent working together with Strange Music and CEO Travis O’Guin, Punch was paying attention.

Punch explains how the label, which now boasts some of the hottest acts in hip hop (Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock), built itself from the ground up, and how Strange Music provided a lot of the blueprint.

“We learned a lot from following the model of Strange Music, Tech N9ne, Travis [O’Guin] and those guys,” he said. “They really pounded the road. They stay on the road. That’s how they generate everything that they got going.”

Congratulations once again to TDE and everything they’ve accomplished so far. We know this is only the beginning of even greater things to come.
