“I’m Sweating. I’m Nervous as a Motherf**ker”: Tech N9ne On Being In The Booth

Mar 5 2018

With his demonstrative approach, unflappable confidence, and a flow few can match Tech N9ne is one of the most elite emcees you will encounter.

When you can attack a song like Tech, and you’ve been doing it for decades, you might think laying down a 16 is a cake walk,  but when discussing  “Levitation” off his new Planet album, Tech gave an amazing breakdown of what it’s like for him to record a verse.

The fans make him levitate, the stage too, but the booth? That’s another story.

I don’t levitate in the booth because I’m so nervous. I want it to be perfect. I want that shit to be right.

In the booth I’m sweating, I’m nervous as a motherfucker, because it’s all I got…it’s how I talk to all the people. I want them to hear the crispness and the preciseness and I probably only get one day, sometimes not even a day, to rehearse.

I’m holding my paper because everything isn’t on the spot and I have to read that shit. I’m always scared, because I’m reading it, like it’s gonna sound like I’m reading it. I’ll have Ben, my engineer, take me back until I get that inflection right if it wasn’t clean enough.

Some of them are hard! “Fresh Out” and “Bad JuJu.” Shit like “Speedom.”

But what comes of it makes Eminem tell me I’m going, that feels so good, because I’m always skeptical.

I always say to my engineer, “If I can get what I got in my recorder into that mic, this is gonna be crazy!” He’s like, “you say that every time and, look, have you ever came out and said no?”

So, I don’t levitate until I step out and hear what I’ve done and Ben turns it up and I’m listening and see how clean it is.

When I get out of there and listen to what I did? Holy shit…that’s when I start levitating.
